Why this is a masterpiece
This bronze silo embodies the style of southern architecture with handrails. A large room is built above a platform with eight supporting posts. In the center of the front wall there are double doors, both with knockers; a threshold lies underfoot. On the front and back of the Xuanshan Roof (overhanging gable roof) there are twelve rows of flat tiles each. Cross shaped carvings decorate the four walls of the silo. A hall with handrails lies before the doors, the handrails with the pattern of two horizontal lines and one vertical line. Bronze silos are extremely rare in Han Dynasty tombs, this large and remarkably preserved model is the first of its kind and has great significance in the study of regional history, agricultural production and handrail-style buildings of the southern ethnic minorities.

History of the Object
The crop production increased greatly with the widening application of iron agricultural tools, improved cultivation methods, the introduction of good stock and artificial irrigation and fertigation. During the Han Dynasty, the crop production in Guangxi not only fulfilled the needs of the local’s daily life but also had enough left over to be stored away. The many models of silos and granaries unearthed from numerous Han Dynasty tombs in Guangxi reflect this situation. Buildings with handrails are still used in many southern minority ethnic groups today, especially in Guangxi. They give off a distinct regional feel.
